What exactly is a ‘toastie’?
Well, it’s not rocket surgery. It’s just a sandwich that’s been toasted. Depending on where you’re from and how you roll, you might refer to it as a toasted or grilled sandwich. But basically if you put something (preferably edible) between two pieces of bread, and then stick it inside some kind of heat source then, congratulations, you have yourself a toastie!
It’s a classic dish which has satisfied generations of hungry toastie enthusiasts the world over. However the simplicity of its design is what affords infinite creative opportunities. There are any number of possible combinations of bread and fillings that can be crafted into toasties, limited only by the human imagination and pioneering spirit.
Why are you doing this?
Thirsty for knowledge, and armed with a toastie maker and a cavalier disregard for culinary conventions, I want to discover new toastie fillings and new toastie experiences. The question is not ‘why’ am I doing this, but ‘why not’?
Also, melting stuff is fun.
What’s wrong with just making a cheese and tomato toastie?
Absolutely nothing, the cheese and tomato toastie is a time-honoured classic. But it’s been done. The Toastie Project is about innovation. It seeks to push the boundaries of contemporary toastie-making and explore a brave new world of toasted goodness. It’s time to put aside the cheese and tomato; a new era in toasties has begun.
So where do you make your toasties then?
These toasties are made in the staffroom at my place of employment, which is furnished with a Kambrook sandwich press that I affectionately refer to as ‘El Toastie Maker’. Oh mi amigo, you have brought so much delight into lunchtimes.
I would also like to add that nothing looks more professional than spending a lot of time making toasties in the staffroom, particularly if you use unusual ingredients which start to burn and the smell then spreads throughout the building. If you want to advance up the corporate ladder I suggest you start doing this as often as possible. Toasties – for business and pleasure.
I find the world of toasties strangely alluring. Can you suggest some useful resources for further research into this dynamic field?
Why yes, I highly recommend the excellent Kiwi Toastie book by Astral Sligo, which was part of the inspiration for this project. It contains recipes for toasties for every type of meal and social occasion. If you buy any toastie-centric work of literature this year, make sure it’s this one!
